The Immigrant Ancestor

In 1906, when my grandmother was 12 years old, she immigrated with her family from Hungary and disembarked at Galveston, Texas. This photo was taken in 1906 at their new home in Dallas so it had to have been within the first year of their arrival in this New World. She was a young girl facing the challenge of learning a new language and customs, and also the promise of beginning a new life. I have a daughter this age now and when I think of the abundant life we enjoy, my heart is filled with gratitude to this family who over 100 years ago had the foresight and courage to leave their homeland, which was soon to be ravaged by war, and make a new start. They have left me a rich heritage.
